Airbus plans to reduce its workforce by 750 positions in a restructuring of its defense and space activities, according to sources from labor unions.

This adjustment represents about 2% of the total number of employees.

The company aims to achieve this without resorting to mandatory layoffs, primarily relying on attrition and not filling certain job openings over the next two years.

The restructuring was announced in response to a financial loss in the defense and space division, attributed to a 300-million-euro charge related to unspecified satellite developments.

This includes the reprogrammable OneSat family. The company also confirmed the consolidation of two fighter businesses into one, combining the future Franco-German-Spanish FCAS/SCAF with the existing Eurofighter and other military aircraft and drones.

Known as ATOM, the reorganization seeks to simplify various programs and streamline the organizational structure to address challenges in Europe’s fragmented arms industry. The spokesperson emphasized that the goal extends beyond cost-cutting to include clarifying responsibilities.

The restructuring has been in progress for most of the year, driven by cutbacks in French and Spanish orders, ambitious projects like the Eurodrone and challenges with the Ariane 6 space launcher.

The CEO, Guillaume Faury, faces the task of restructuring and reducing costs while managing diverse national sovereignty businesses.

As part of a separate management reorganization in its civil business, Faury will step back from the day-to-day operations of planemaking to focus on strategic activities starting in January. The simplified structure in defense and space is expected to be in place early next year.
